Why Are Nuts Typically Designed in a Hexagonal Shape?

1.  Ease of Operation
• Hexagonal Nuts only require a 60-degree turn per rotation, compared to 90 degrees for Square Nuts, making them ideal for use in confined spaces.
• The large contact surface between the hexagonal edges and the wrench prevents slipping, addressing the problem of slippage with octagonal nuts.
2.  Efficient Material Utilization
• Nuts are usually machined from round bars. The hexagonal shape requires less cutting than a square nut, making better use of the raw material.
• With the same diameter round bar, a hexagonal nut is larger and therefore stronger than a square nut.
3.  Practical Operational Needs
• Hexagonal nuts are compatible with standard wrenches or socket tools and can be easily engaged without precise alignment, improving work efficiency.
• Wrench handles often have a 30-degree angle with the opening, allowing the wrench to be flipped for operation in tighter spaces, which is crucial in restricted areas.
4.  Strength and Stability
• The hexagonal shape ensures even distribution of force during tightening, providing a secure fit without damaging the nut or bolt.
5.  Limitations of Other Shapes
• Square nuts require larger rotational angles and waste more material during manufacturing, limiting their use.
• Octagonal and higher-sided nuts are prone to slippage and insufficient strength, while odd-sided shapes require specialized tools, reducing practicality.

Conclusion
The hexagonal nut design is a well-balanced choice that considers rotational angles, ease of use, material efficiency, and structural strength. This design not only facilitates installation but also significantly improves work efficiency, making hexagonal nuts the preferred option in both industrial and everyday applications.
